After 19 long months, the United States is finally opening its borders to foreigners after the havoc wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we’ve summarized what you need to know about these changes and what you will need before booking your travel plans. 

These rules will go into effect on November 8th, 2021.

What borders are open?

  • Land borders with Canada and Mexico are now open
  • Air travel restrictions based on country have been lifted

Who is allowed entry?

  • All fully vaccinated foreign nationals, regardless of the reason. Any vaccine approved by the World Health Organization for emergency use will be accepted. 
  • A person is considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after their final dose of the vaccine. 
  • Unvaccinated U.S. Citizens may re-enter with proof of a negative COVID test within 1 day of travel
  • Unvaccinated children are exempt but are subject to testing. For land or ferry crossings, unvaccinated children are exempt if traveling with a fully vaccinated adult. 
  • Unvaccinated foreigners for non-essential travel will no longer be allowed entry

What documents or other requirements will be in place?

  • Verbal attestations of vaccination status
  • Proof of vaccination (both digital and paper are acceptable)
  • Testing is required for air travelers. A negative COVID test must be obtained within 3 days of their flight’s departure to the United States. 
  • Unvaccinated U.S. Citizens may re-enter with proof of a negative COVID test within 1 day of travel
  • Other unvaccinated travelers with permission to enter without full vaccination will be required to take a COVID test 3 – 5 days after arrival and must quarantine for 7 days regardless of test result
  • Land crossing will not require the COVID tests, only proof of vaccination.
